Hey there, I've been looking for a seaglass necklace but I want to be sure that it is real sea glass and not man made.  Is there a way for me to tell besides taking someone's word for it?  I really appreciate any feed back I can get!

Thank You!

This is what they say on Wikipedia:

Sea glass can also be produced artificially by using a rock tumbler, and some companies sell artificially produced sea glass to tourists or make jewelry from it. As littering is increasingly discouraged, authentic sea glass becomes harder and harder to find and artificial sea glass is sometimes fraudulently advertised as authentic. Rock tumbled glass is not the same as sea glass, since long-term exposure to water conditions creates an etched surface on the glass that cannot be duplicated artificially. The differences can be distinguished microscopically.

Sea glass collectors claim that the term “sea glass” should be reserved for authentic specimens, and artificial sea glass should be termed “craft glass”.

It is extremely difficult to tell sometimes and a lot of people are very dishonest. One of the biggest problems with english sea glass is the ease people can get hold of the antique glass, starting off with glass that age adds to the overall appearance when it has been tumbled or sand blasted, stoppers and marbles are the easiest things to fake, with pottery coming a close second, with sea worn potttery the sides should match the aging on the front and backs, if the back is yellow and cracked the sides shouldn't be bright white. I would stick to people with good reputations so ask around, look at feedback on etsy or ebay, and go with your gut, if something seams to be too good to be true, it probably is. Buying off etsy or ebay also gives you some protection as you can report a person for selling fakes and get your money back via paypal. I personally don;t think anyone should fake sea glass, even if they are open and honest about it themselves, as you never know what the next person who buys it is going to do, but I appreciate that people want rare colours withut paying the prices. I collect all my own glass, so i know mine is genuine, I sell on etsy with the username englishseaglass, there are a lot of genuine sellers on etsy, your reputation depends on it. Good luck x
